Well, we did it again! On October 4th, it was announced that Hennighan’s Topshop had reached the national finals in the Independent Takeaway category for the National Fish and Chip Awards 2017. It also happened to be our 29th wedding anniversary – who could’ve thought of a better way to celebrate!

Within half an hour of the announcement, we had photographers turn up, and I’ve never known the phone to ring as much as it did with people asking for interviews. Many of the interviewers asked how it feels to get to this stage, I’d always reply saying, “It feels like winning the lottery – but to win nationally would be a dream come true”.

As a top ten finalist, every shop owner gets the opportunity to go on a study trip with the Norwegian Seafood Council. As David had been beforehand back in 2014, it was Eleanor’s opportunity to see where our fish comes from.

After returning from the trip, I can honestly say it was an experience of a lifetime. Not only have I gained more knowledge about the industry I’m working in, but I have also met some incredible people I will stay in touch with and see again in London for the awards.

To have come this far in the competition is incredible, but a lot of credit goes to the staff behind our award-winning fish and chips, as we would’ve never been able to do it without them! We’re looking forward to January as we now prepare for the awards. Good luck to you all, and we’ll see you there!
